After 12 weeks of play and a week of playoffs in the Ipswich
Men's Over 30 softball league, it all came down to a best
out of three series between Townsend Comeau Oil and Mike
& Sons Oil to determine league supremacy for 2008. By
the end of the day, history had been made with a couple
of surprises along the way.

Abeautiful sunny day greeted both teams as they
took the field for game one. The first game match-up featured
Mike & Son's Jimmy Edwards facing Townsend Comeu's Larry
White. The T/C crew jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the first
inning with timely hitting by Tommy Spinhurn, Marc Comeau,
Mike Dupray and Mark Meaney. T/C would add one more run in
the 2nd inning with a timely two out triple by Mike Dupray,
who was then batted in by Mark Meaney.
The game would remain scoreless until the bottom
of the 4th when Scott Garand, Mike Stasiuk, Chris Perna and
Mike Blake started a hitting attack of their own to cut the
lead by two. Both teams would score twice in the 5th leaving
it a two run game. The
T/C crew would score two more times in the last two innings
and hold off a rally by the Mike's contingent in the bottom
of the 7th to earn a 9-7 win. White got the win for T/C while
Edwards took the loss for Mikes. Mike Dupray led the hitting
attack for T/C while Scott Garand, Chirs Perna, and Dan Brennan
all had two hits for Mikes.
Game two would set an Over 30 record, lasting
12 innings, with neither waving the white flag. Mike's got
off to a four run lead with key contributions on offense from
Jim Restucci, Mike Stasiuk, John Bell and Jimmy Powers. T/C
cut the lead by two in the bottom half of the second inning
with hits from Steve Murdoch, Mark Hardie, and Will Maker.
Mikes would score four more runs in the top of the fourth
only to have T/C come back with three of their own in the
bottom half. Trailing 10-6 in the bottom of the fifth T/C
started the inning with three straight hits and a walk, which
they capitalized on to tie the game at 10.
It would remain scoreless by both teams through
the end of the 7th forcing it to go into extra frames. Not
until the 9th did Mike's attempt to put the game on ice with
key hits by Scott Garand, Chris Perna, and Brendan Kennedy
putting the Oilers up by two. Not to go down quietly the T/C
crew put together two key hits by Larry White and Tommy Spinhurn.
Mike
Dupray hit a deep fly ball to lefty center to score Spinhurn
to tie the game back at 10. In the top of the 12th Mike's
Chris Perna lead off with a double and was singled in by Mike
Blake to give the Mike's crew a 11-10 lead and eventual win,
despite a rally by T/C which came up short to tie the series
at one. Mike Blake earned the win for Mikes while Larry White
took the loss for T/C coming in for the injured Bill Knovack
in the 3rd inning.
Game three was set, and it would come down to
who got the hits and defense when it mattered the most. T/C
got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the top half of the 1st inning
with a lead off single by Tom Spinhurn followed by a Mike
Dupray single to drive Spinhurn in for the early lead. Not
to be upstaged by their counterparts the Mike & Sons crew
scored three of their own in the bottom half of the first
with hits by Jim Restucci, Mike Stasiuk, and Chris Perna.
The
game would remain scoreless until the top of the 4th when
Townsend Comeau struck for four runs with big hits by Dupray,
Mark Meaney, Jamie Morely, Steve Murdoch, Larry White and
Matt Comeau giving the Oilers a slim 5-3 lead. Mike's struck
right back scoring 1 back after a lead off hit by Perna; Scott
Higgins batted in Perna to cut the lead by one run. In he
top half of the 5th T/C struck for two more runs with Meaney
driving in Spinhurn, and Marc Comeau who earlier connected
for back to back hits. Mike's would strike right back in the
bottom of the fifth scoring four runs, capped off by a three
run home run by Perna to give the Mike's crew a 8-7 lead that
would earn them the win and give them their second consecutive
championship.
Jimmy Edwards got the win in relief taking over
for Mike Blake. Larry White, was the tough luck loser who
pitched very well taking over for Bill Knovack in the 3rd
inning of the 2nd game and pitching the whole 3rd game.
